How Pilates Works.......

So the theme for this season can be easily summed up as to how Pilates Works, pun intended. I have clients who have come to me in all shapes, ages and sizes and usually dealing with back issues, replaced knees, hips and a lot of formerly frozen shoulders.

These individuals were once very active or trying to get back to their normal level of activity. Or in the case of the snowbirds, they usually are trying to maintain their Pilates routine that they have at home by training with me at my studio. Everyone wants to move with ease, be pain free and improve their athletic performance.

The reason why Pilates works, is that it is so much more than people intend it to be. Which is great for them and great for me. I love the look on peoples faces when they first try Footwork on the Reformer and they are amazed at how good it makes them feel.

Essentially, Pilates works because it improves posture and everyone wants good posture. Posture is a composite of the positions of all the joints of the body at a given moment. Posture may also be described in terms of muscle balance. The standard or ideal posture involves a minimal amount of stress and strain, promotes efficiency in the body and the spine presents normal curves. The bones of the lower extremities are in ideal alignment for weight bearing.

So, to simplify it even more,

MUSCLE STRENGTH +MUSCLE BALANCE = GOOD POSTURE

Pilates Works by building muscle strength and balancing out muscles. Pilates will lengthen muscles that have been shortened and strengthen muscles that are weak from being in an elongated position.

Please call or email me to be evaluated and treated for postural problems or simply to maintain your Pilates routine. I look forward to hearing from you!
